The Stay

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by 10am. Early check-in or late check-out may be possible depending on availability — just ask us and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Is breakfast included?

Breakfast is available as an optional add-on for $8 per person per day. We'll give you a voucher redeemable at a  selection of our favourite local cafés — a great way to explore the area each morning.

Can I book the whole villa for a group?

Yes — Casa de Mono can accommodate groups of up to twelve across four private units. Each unit has its own entrance and is fully self-contained, while the gardens and outdoor spaces are shared. Contact us directly to discuss whole-villa bookings.

Is the water safe to drink?

No — tap water is not safe to drink in Bocas. We provide filtered drinking water in your room along with reusable glass water bottles to reduce plastic waste. Tap water is fine for showering.

Can I flush toilet paper?

No — all homes and businesses in Bocas use a septic system. Please use the waste bins provided in each bathroom.

Is the WiFi reliable?

Yes — the villa has high-speed WiFi suitable for streaming, video calls, and remote working. As with most of Bocas, occasional brief outages can occur but are generally short-lived.

Getting Around

What's the best way to get around?

Taxis are the most convenient and affordable option — rates are fixed at approximately $3 per person to town, $20 to Playa Bluff, and $25 to Starfish or Drago. Simply wait on the road outside the villa and one will pass by shortly. Only 4 people per taxi unless you pre-book a van. For day rentals, quad bikes are around $90 for the first day and $50 for each additional day. Scooters, e-bikes, and bicycles are also available across the road.

Is there Uber?

No — Bocas del Toro does not have Uber or any ride-share services. Regular taxis are the way to go. They operate on a shared basis so the driver may pick up other passengers — confirm the price before continuing your journey. For larger groups, we can help pre-book a van taxi.

How do I get to the villa from the airport?

Bocas del Toro airport (BOC) is approximately 5km from the villa — a 10-minute taxi ride. Taxis are available outside the terminal. We can also arrange an airport transfer for you; just send us your flight details in advance.

How do I get to other islands?

Water taxis depart from the main waterfront in Bocas Town and connect to Isla Bastimentos, Carenero, and other islands. We can help arrange boat tours and day trips to Zapatillas, Red Frog Beach, dolphin watching, and more.

Money & Practicalities

Should I bring cash?

Yes — cash is essential in Bocas. Taxis, water taxis, street vendors, and many smaller restaurants are cash only. Panama uses US dollars. There are only two ATMs in Bocas Town — one at Banco General and one outside Alba Supermarket. Withdrawals are limited to $250 per transaction and cost $7 per transaction, and ATMs can occasionally run out of cash during busy periods. We strongly recommend bringing enough cash for your stay.

What plugs does Panama use?

Panama uses the same Type A & B plugs and 110V power as the United States — no adaptor needed for US or Canadian devices.

What's the tipping culture?

Tipping is not mandatory but always appreciated. Around 10% is customary for good service at restaurants and for tours.

Where can I buy groceries?

A small mini market is right across the road for snacks and essentials. The closest full supermarket is Las Cabanas, about a 5-minute drive away. Bocas Town has several supermarkets with a wider selection.

The Area

Where are the best beaches for swimming?

Close to the villa: Skully's Beach is just across the road with calm water. Coral Pool is a one-minute walk further — a natural swimming hole when the sea is calm. Ohana Beach nearby is good for adults and gentle enough for kids. Further afield: Starfish Beach and Playa del Drago have calm, clear water year-round. Note — Playa Bluff has powerful waves and rip currents and is not safe for swimming most of the year.

Are there mosquitoes?

Yes — mosquitoes are most active around sunrise and sunset. We recommend bringing DEET-based insect repellent. There is no Malaria in Bocas del Toro. All rooms have A/C which helps, and the 3-bedroom apartment has screened walls for natural ventilation.

Is Bocas del Toro safe?

Bocas is a friendly and welcoming island community. Big Creek is a quiet residential neighbourhood well away from the noise of town. As with any travel destination, we recommend taking normal precautions and securing your belongings, particularly at night.

Should I bring reef shoes and snorkel gear?

Reef shoes are recommended for rocky shorelines, coral pools, and snorkelling spots. If you don't have a pair, they are inexpensive and available in Bocas Town. Snorkels and longboards are provided at the villa by the Paradise sign — free for guest use during your stay.

Can you arrange tours and activities?

Absolutely — this is one of the things we love doing. We can arrange boat tours to Zapatillas, snorkelling, dolphin watching, surf lessons, chocolate farm visits, ziplining, jungle walks, massage therapy in your room, restaurant reservations, and much more. We only recommend guides we know and trust — eco-conscious locals who provide exceptional experiences. All arrangements are made at no extra cost to you.
